Whenever we need to make a significant adjustment to brightness, contrast, or color gamma, we usually have to go through our graphics card software. These are parameters that should be immediately accessible to the user, even with the help of hotkeys. That is exactly what the old program Gamma Panel offers. Even at 20 years old, Gamma Panel does an excellent job presenting the three sliders in a simple interface, along with a profile system you can invoke with whatever key combination you want.
An old saying goes that simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve, and that is especially true in software. The concept of feature creep is well documented, and even with the best intentions, some programs end up as horrible, bloated things with memory leaks and performance problems. One exception to the rule is NirSoft software. Its projects, ranging from advanced file search in Windows to active connection logging, along with a general uninstaller and a simple volume control, have never abandoned their discipline.
Some functions on our computers could follow that line. An example? Try to adjust brightness or contrast without touching the monitor or relying on official software.
How to adjust brightness, contrast, and gamma with Gamma Panel
To find the answer, you have to go back a long way... almost 20 years. The last available build of Gamma Panel was published in December 2016. However, since it uses normal Win32 API calls, it works without issues even on the latest version of Windows. It all comes down to changing the brightness, contrast, and gamma levels, and then saving that configuration under a color profile with an associated keyboard shortcut.
Personally, I recommend associating a profile with the normal values (you can call it Reset or something similar) and its own association. The documentation says that pressing Esc while Gamma Panel is resident restores all parameters to normal, but in case it doesn't respond, the shortcut we created will be enough.
Gamma Panel takes up only 113 kilobytes. All settings are saved in an ini file within the same folder (so it's portable), and if you want it to start with Windows, you'll need to create a shortcut in the Start menu.
Honestly, there's nothing more to add, except that its developer vanished into thin air, and only copies remain on portals like Majorgeeks. Gamma Panel is small, lightweight, and it works. Don't hesitate to try it.
