In August and September of last year, we learned about an enthusiast's effort to create a miniaturized version of the Nintendo GameCube. But the community hasn't stood still. Thanks to the practice of trimming (or PCB cutting) and the excellent backward compatibility of the Nintendo Wii, we now discover the GC Nano, a mod that reduces the GameCube to a fraction of its original volume.
The GameCube wasn't the most celebrated console of its time, but with two decades under its belt, we can now say its modding potential is extraordinary. This was demonstrated through channels like Bringus Studios, which managed to miniaturize the original design.
However, there is another route: the backward compatibility of the Nintendo Wii. Some enthusiasts have learned to make precise cuts on the Wii's PCB, removing unnecessary components in the process. This trimming reduces the Wii to its minimum expression, and reaches its definitive configuration in the GC Nano.
GC Nano, the Miniature GameCube Nintendo Never Made
Needless to say, the mod is very advanced, and there is a risk of ruining the hardware due to the depth of the cuts required on the Wii's PCB. Add to that the installation of custom boards that restore storage, replace gamepad connectors, and redistribute power. At the same time, the Wii demands active cooling in this configuration.
The Wii PCB cut is known as "Omega", and it is the most aggressive of its kind. Moreover, the NAND chip needs to be relocated, which is only possible with a flex and solder points that are impossible without special tools. As if that weren't enough, the GC Nano includes an HDMI mod for the best image quality.
Some users might think this miniaturization of the GameCube is exaggerated… but the final result is nothing short of amazing. The combination of custom hardware and custom software (none of this would be possible without RVLoader) makes the GC Nano a unique and "double" console, because Wii games still work flawlessly.
