Google announced on October 29, 2026, that Gemini can create, preview and edit files inside a chat. PDFs work on mobile and the web; Google lists the other supported formats as web-only. Google’s announcement describes the new workflow.
How editing works inside a Gemini chat
Ask Gemini to create a supported file, then expand it to full screen to type edits directly. You can also highlight text to ask a question or request a revision. Google’s example shows a table being turned into a graph.
Google also demonstrates creating a PDF study guide from uploaded handwritten lecture notes, then editing and asking questions about highlighted sections. That example illustrates the workflow, rather than promising a particular transcription result.
Supported file types and device limits
Google lists PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code. PDF preview and editing work on mobile and the web. The other formats on Google’s list are web-only, so a phone or tablet can handle the PDF workflow but not those other listed file types.
Google says the feature is available in all languages where the Gemini app is available.
Accounts and administrator controls
Google says the feature is available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and people using personal Google accounts. Google Workspace Updates also says there is no separate administrator control for file editing; administrators can control access to the Gemini app itself. (Google Workspace Updates)
How this differs from “Help me create” in Google Docs
“Help me create” is a separate Google Docs feature Google announced in 2024 for creating styled documents from a prompt. At the time, Google said it supported pageless documents and English only, did not use web search, and required Smart features and personalization to be enabled. Those details applied to that Docs feature, not to editing files in a Gemini chat. (Google’s 2024 Google Docs update)
