GeoFS: An Accessible Flight Simulator to Play Online

Part of the gaming world has surrendered to Flight Simulator 2020, and from what we've seen so far, it seems justified. But that's not the only option when it comes to flying. If you're looking for something more modest in terms of hardware requirements, free, and with frequent updates, you should try GeoFS, which works directly in the browser.

Fans of the Flight Simulator franchise have welcomed the 2020 edition with open arms, and those who had never played one of its titles before discovered in this new release an excellent starting point. Beyond the details about requirements, framerate, and massive downloads, the truth is there's great enthusiasm, and Microsoft has already confirmed several future updates.

The problem is that those $60 / €70 are a hard pill to swallow for many users right now, but the good news is there are other flight simulators out there, completely free and more tolerant in terms of specifications. One of them is GeoFS, which has the additional advantage of running in the browser. That's right: you don't have to download clients or modules. One click on the Fly button, choose your plane, and the sky's the limit.

A wide selection of aircraft

Officially, GeoFS offers a total of 24 vehicles to fly, ranging from a hot air balloon and a Cessna 172 to the classic Concorde and an F-16 fighter jet. There are also other models contributed by the player community, such as the Boeing 747 (in the process of being retired) and the Airbus A330.

But before trying bigger planes, I recommend practicing and getting used to the controls. Mouse use is quite erratic, and I got better results with the keyboard after reducing its sensitivity. Another aspect that definitely doesn't help is the camera. Personally, I think they're all bad, and I ended up doing most of my flights from the cockpit position. Finally, don't expect overly elaborate physics in GeoFS. It's realistic enough to fly, but some planes bounce like balls when they hit the ground.

GeoFS is free if you choose to fly in a world with standard definition; otherwise, you'll need to create an account and get a subscription of €10 per year. The difference in quality is enormous, and if despite its limitations you get hooked on GeoFS, it might be worth paying that fee.
