From the darkest corners of the web, forgotten even by time itself, we've stumbled upon what was once a true sensation: a total conversion for Doom 2. The enthusiasts shaped many mods, but this one is special, throwing aside the classic space marine story to make room for none other than the Ghostbusters.
I think it's not necessary to remind anything about Doom 2, except that it's a true classic that every person in front of a computer should play at least once, whether online or with the help of an emulator. Once the official levels were exhausted, and the space marine managed against all odds to defeat the demonic hordes, fans decided to create more material.
Slowly, mods made their appearance in the Doom universe, and I say “slowly” because back then, distributing an eight or ten megabyte file could be a real nightmare among those dial-up modem riders. The magic of the web, mirrors, links and nostalgia allow us even today to access those mods. And by some coincidence that we cannot fully understand, what appeared on our screens is a total conversion of Doom 2 to the Ghostbusters.
How old is Ghostbusters Doom? If my calculations don't fail, just over fifteen years. The mod's creator hasn't updated the portal since July 2004, although the .wad file date indicates April 2003. But it's still online and working! A real piece of history, no doubt. This modification is supposed to have a total of 32 levels. The player takes on the role of one of the Ghostbusters (Egon/Harold Ramis), and with his limited weapons (at least, at the beginning of the game) must face all kinds of specters and creatures. Several of the levels remained incomplete, but in theory it should be possible to finish this version of the mod.
The simplest way to run Ghostbusters Doom requires three elements: a full version of Doom 2, the mod extracted inside the game folder, and a copy of the ZDoom module, which will allow us to open Doom 2 under Windows without additional settings. Once all this is in the same folder, the execution command is “zdoom -file gbdoom2.wad” without the quotes. This tells ZDoom to open the Ghostbusters Doom .wad instead of the original Doom 2. Enjoy it... if you dare.
