After a brief teaser that showed absolutely nothing, Sony finally presents the trailer for Ghostbusters with the female version of the Ghostbusters. Will it live up to the original?
A plot that feels familiar
Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooting the franchise with a cast of hilarious new characters. This time the story introduces us to Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, authors of a book positing that ghosts are real, who form a Ghostbusters team with nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann and subway employee Patty Tolan to clean up Manhattan from a ghost invasion. They soon realize the world is in danger after the appearance of a mysterious and powerful demon known as Rowan, who can take absolute control over humans.
Reboot or sequel?
After watching the trailer for the Ghostbusters reboot, it's clear the plot seems like a copy of the original film. Something that's confusing is that both director Paul Feig and screenwriter Katie Dippold have repeatedly emphasized that this movie is not a sequel. It's a complete reboot, set in a universe where no one in New York has ever seen a ghost and the city was never destroyed by a giant marshmallow. However, the trailer presents itself absolutely as a sequel, saying More than 30 years ago, four scientists saved New York. That doesn't match the interpretation of Feig and Dippold of the film as a reboot or re-imagination, and it seems they're selling it as a sequel. It would have been better to have a less extensive video (which ultimately shows you the whole movie) and more decent like the edited trailer by user Mike Colver, which saves us from the bad jokes of the original video.
Can it live up to the original?
But beyond that, it will be very difficult for this Ghostbusters reboot to reinvent a story that was loved by franchise fans; after all, the first Ghostbusters movie became an iconic pop culture piece of the '80s thanks to its concept and a very comedic cast. The film stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Supporting them are Chris Hemsworth, Neil Casey, Andy García, and Michael Kenneth Williams, among others. Produced by Village Roadshow Pictures, the film is directed by Paul Feig (Spy) and written by Katie Dippold (The Heat) and Feig. Ghostbusters will hit theaters on July 15, 2016.
