Whenever we recommend a free and open source program, it's very likely you'll need to visit its GitHub profile. Unfortunately, the platform's interface is not very intuitive, and it suffers from some significant limitations. One of them is that we cannot download folders independently, forcing us to get the entire repository… unless we use GitHub Download Directory.

At NeoTeo we constantly search for new programs, and sooner or later that search leads us to GitHub. Our priority is free, portable, and open source software, but GitHub also serves as a “mirror” for many secondary modules, artificial intelligence models, samples, and other resources. The problem is that its download functions are limited: for example, if we need the contents of a specific folder, GitHub does not allow its individual download, and the only way is to get the entire repository. Fortunately, there is an alternative.

Paste the folder URL, confirm the download, and wait

In essence, GitHub Download Directory automatically downloads all the content of a folder and prepares a ZIP file for local storage. We don't need accounts or profiles: all it asks is the exact URL of the folder we're looking for. GitHub Download Directory does not preserve the original structure, only focusing on the files.

The ZIP has the files, and nothing else

The rest is a matter of waiting. Of course, the time this process takes will depend on the number of files, their size, and connection speed, but GitHub Download Directory doesn't appear to have hard limits (we just need to enter our own token if the number of files is huge), and it responded very well during our tests.

GitHub Download Directory is a creation of the developers of Refined GitHub, an extension that optimizes and simplifies the interface of that site. The last time I tried to use it, I wasn't too impressed, but GitHub Download Directory is a good middle ground, and you don't have to download anything to use it.
