Google announced an optional scam-protection mode for Google Messages on October 14, 2026, with rollout scheduled for the following weeks. The mode uses cloud-based Gemini to analyze complex conversations with unknown senders; Gemini Nano’s separate on-device link checks have a distinct device list and mechanism. Google’s announcement also describes safeguards for chat notifications, screen sharing and call forwarding.

With Enhanced protection enabled, Google says cloud Gemini models analyze message context and sender intent in conversations with unknown senders. Google says this analysis runs through Private AI Compute, an encrypted environment designed to keep the data inaccessible to Google and others.

Gemini Nano handles a different task: checking unfamiliar links on-device with real-time web signals. Google names Pixel 10+, the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold8, along with other select devices, for this link-checking feature. That list applies to link checks, not to every part of Enhanced protection.

Google says redesigned warnings add context and time before users open links sent from numbers outside their contacts; the checkpoint is available on Android 6 and newer. Separately, when someone manually reports a text as spam, Google may receive the message and its contents for analysis.

Android adds safeguards for notifications, screens and calls

Google announced Gemini scam protection for Messages and Android

Google scheduled the expansion of scam alerts in chat notifications for later in 2026, reaching additional users through device-maker partners. The alerts can appear before someone opens a supported chat app, and availability varies by manufacturer. Named partners include HONOR, Infinix, iQOO, itel, JOVI, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, TECNO, vivo and Xiaomi.

Google said automatic privacy protection during screen sharing was rolling out in October 2026 to devices running Android 15 or newer. During a live session, the feature blanks login fields and payment screens in Chrome and Android WebView.

Call-forwarding protection was scheduled to start on Pixel and other select devices in early December 2026. Google says it blocks apps from quietly enabling forwarding and warns users before a forwarding code they enter takes effect. The warning asks whether calls should be sent to another phone number.

Google’s Brazil call figure covers two banks

Android’s verified financial calls feature works with official banking apps to check whether a bank initiated an incoming call; when verification fails, the call ends and the user receives an alert. Google says the feature launched in Brazil in June with Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco, and reports more than 3 million blocked spoofed calls from those banks’ inbound-only numbers since launch. Google reported the total.
