Google Cloud reportedly announced plans to donate Agent Substrate and gVisor to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), according to NeoTeo’s earlier report. That account also mentions OpenRL. The CNCF lists Agent Substrate at Sandbox maturity, while separate reporting describes a managed offering on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).

CNCF maturity and managed-cloud availability answer different questions.

Sandbox describes Agent Substrate’s maturity

The CNCF project page lists Agent Substrate at Sandbox maturity. The foundation defines Sandbox projects as experimental and not yet widely tested in production. That label describes project maturity; it is separate from whether a managed service is offered.

Reports describe onboarding and a managed GKE offering

Intelligence Artificielle Maroc reported on November 6 that Agent Substrate, gVisor, and OpenRL were undergoing CNCF onboarding involving community maintainers and independent build infrastructure. The same report said Agent Substrate 1.0 was generally available as a managed GKE offering. The onboarding account concerns project governance; the GKE milestone concerns product availability.

Agent Substrate is also distinct from Google’s purpose-built Agent Compute Engine service. NeoTeo’s earlier coverage of Agent Compute Engine explains how Google positioned the two offerings.
