Google DeepMind is planning a robotics lab in Watertown, Massachusetts, to house a hardware team building on the company’s AI and robotics work. The Boston Globe reports that construction is slated for completion in 2027; Aaron Saunders, Google DeepMind’s vice president of hardware engineering, says more information will follow later that year.

A new home for the hardware team

Saunders announced the lab in a LinkedIn post and said the team is growing. He invited machinists, engineers and researchers to contact him. The facility is intended to bring hardware work together with Google DeepMind’s AI and robotics research.

The reported site is in Watertown

The Boston Globe places the lab at Arsenal on the Charles, 200 Talcott Ave., in Watertown. It reports that Google leased 35,000 square feet in a 50,000-square-foot building. Saunders describes the location more broadly as the Boston area.

Construction is targeted for 2027

The Boston Globe reported on October 15, 2026, that construction was slated for completion in 2027. Saunders separately said in his post that the team would share more information later in 2027.

A separate cornhole test

Google DeepMind’s video shows Apptronik Apollo 2 throwing beanbags during a separate cornhole test.

In a Google DeepMind video published October 13, 2026, researchers describe an internal test using Gemini 4 Argon and an Apptronik Apollo 2 humanoid robot. They showed the system a video of a person playing cornhole, used the MuJoCo simulator for practice and iteration, then adjusted the robot’s release in real-world trials. The video’s narration reports seven consecutive successful shots.
