There are more than 2.5 billion Android devices in the world. That's 2.5 billion opportunities for an idea or tool to take off in the market, and it all starts with creating an app. Of course, the process is not at all simple, and some have even called it a terrible idea. But if you want to learn the process from the ground up, Google has just released a new course based on JetBrains' Kotlin language.
You want to create an app for Android, but you don't know how to program. Millions of users are in the same situation, and we've already shared some potential solutions. Andromo and MIT App Inventor enable the "zero code" concept, and for those who depend on Amazon Web Services, the giant offers Honeycode. But what about Google itself? What resources does it have available for new developers interested in creating Android apps?
Learn to Create Android Apps
That question brings us to the brand new course "Android Basics in Kotlin", which is being published on the Android Developers portal. Divided into five units, the course will help you learn the fundamentals of building apps with the Kotlin programming language. If the name doesn't sound familiar, Kotlin was designed by the Czech company JetBrains in 2011, and in May of last year, Google declared it the "preferred language" for app development.
For now, the portal contains the first unit, focused on getting started with Kotlin, inserting images and text into an Android app, and using classes, objects, and conditionals to improve user interaction. As you advance through each unit, you'll also receive small medals or badges that highlight your progress.
The only major limitation in "Android Basics in Kotlin" is none other than language. Something tells me Mountain View will take care of translating the content in the near future, but if you want to start now, you'll need a certain command of English, although that hasn't stopped us before...
