Google began a global rollout of Gemini Skills in Gemini chat on Sept. 30, 2026, making them available across Google AI subscription tiers to people aged 18 or older. The rollout is phased, and Google said access for people under 18 would come later.
Who can use Gemini Skills?
Google says Skills are available across its Google AI subscription tiers. That access applies to people aged 18 and older; the company described access for younger users as coming later. Because the rollout is phased, eligible users may not receive access at the same time.
How Skills work in Gemini chat
A Skill saves instructions you can reuse instead of repeating them in each prompt—for example, a preferred writing style or the structure for a recurring work proposal. To call one directly, type / followed by its name in the prompt bar. Google says Gemini can also apply a Skill automatically when a prompt matches, and multiple Skills can be combined.
Skills can include reference files such as plain-text documents, PDFs, or images. Google said sharing Skills and adding files from Google Drive and notebooks from Gemini Notebook would follow in the coming weeks.
When Google plans to move Gems into Skills
Google plans to migrate Gemini Gems automatically as it ends Gems support in stages: for personal accounts starting in November; for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts in March 2027; and for Workspace education accounts in June 2027.
Google Gems by Google Labs are a separate product from Gemini Gems. Google plans to discontinue the Labs Gems, but they will not migrate into Skills.
