Figures reported on September 30, 2026, put Google’s AI Contribution Pilot at about 100 publishers and describe sharply different payouts. Some smaller sites reportedly received under $1,000 over several months, while one early participant was on track to earn more than $1 million a year.
Google’s stated experiment with publisher partnerships
On June 18, 2026, Google said it was piloting a partnership model with websites whose content contributes to the freshness and factuality of generative AI responses through grounding. Grounding means anchoring an AI response in source information.
Reported payouts vary sharply
Several small and midsize publishers reportedly received payments equal to about 0.1% of their advertising revenue. One early participant was reportedly on track to earn more than $1 million annually, while some smaller sites reportedly received less than $1,000 over several months. These examples describe different publishers and periods, not a standard payout.
The reported payment basis is meaningful contribution to an AI answer, rather than a payment for each visible citation. Publishers reportedly found month-to-month earnings tracking in Google Search Console confusing and the meaning of a qualifying contribution unclear, making future earnings harder to predict. Some also described niche topics with strong audience interest, including anime and gaming, as stronger earners.
Google’s News AI pilot is separate
Google also described a News AI pilot with more than 200 publications globally. That program involves commercial partnerships for enhanced content rights, specialized delivery methods, experimental AI features and audience engagement; it is separate from the AI Contribution Pilot.
