Vals AI’s GPT-6 Astra Minecraft run made substantial late-game progress before a Creeper destroyed the chest holding its valuable items and its bed. Afterward, the model spent several hours doing mostly potato farming. It did not reach the Ender Dragon.

What happened to GPT-6 Astra in Minecraft

The run was aimed at advancing through Minecraft toward its late-game objective. GPT-6 Astra operated in the game environment and, before the explosion, built a semi-automatic blaze farm, collected six blaze rods, defeated six or more Endermen and obtained three Ender Pearls.

The turning point came when a Creeper destroyed both the chest and the bed. That wiped out the stored resources in the chest and removed the established respawn point provided by the bed—two setbacks at once, and a particularly nasty Minecraft-shaped lesson in inventory management.

How far Astra progressed before the explosion

The progress was meaningful because it reached several difficult milestones rather than stopping at basic resource gathering. A blaze farm can provide a repeatable source of blaze rods, while Ender Pearls are part of the path toward creating Eyes of Ender, the items used to locate the stronghold and reach the End.

Astra’s reported haul was:

  • Six blaze rods from the semi-automatic blaze farm.
  • Six or more Endermen defeated.
  • Three Ender Pearls collected.

That sequence put the agent well beyond the opening hours of a typical Minecraft world, but progress toward the Ender Dragon is not the same as defeating it. The run stopped short of that objective.

Why losing the chest and bed mattered

The Creeper blast damaged two different parts of Astra’s setup. The chest held the valuable items gathered during the run, while the bed served as the established respawn point. Losing the first forced the model to rebuild its resource base; losing the second changed where it would return after dying.

The generated reminders that followed focused on carrying critical items and avoiding unguarded storage. Vals AI also recorded Astra distinguishing sugarcane from a Creeper after the explosion, a small but concrete change in how it handled a potentially dangerous visual cue.

The hours of potato farming

After the destruction, Vals AI said GPT-6 Astra spent several hours doing essentially nothing beyond farming potatoes. The activity was a sharp change from the earlier push through the Nether and toward Ender Pearls.

The model also produced self-critical notes about wasted effort and protecting valuable items. Those notes document a new set of written rules appearing after the setback; they do not turn the behavior into evidence of a human emotional state.

What the test shows about computer-using AI

The run highlights a difficult part of long-horizon AI control: making progress is only half the job. The agent also has to preserve resources, recover from mistakes and keep pursuing a distant objective after an unexpected loss.

GPT-6 Astra demonstrated a chain of actions that included construction, combat, resource collection and navigation toward Minecraft’s late game. But the Creeper incident exposed the cost of losing accumulated resources, and the final result remained incomplete: the Ender Dragon was never reached.
