OpenAI plans to end new custom GPT creation in affected Enterprise workspaces on October 26, 2026, and has scheduled the standard GPT retirement for December 11. Qualifying Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have a February 11, 2027 retirement date. OpenAI says existing GPT conversations will remain accessible after retirement, but they will not move into the replacement plugin. WhatsNew reports a phased transition from Gemini Gems to Skills, while Anthropic is rolling out a new version of Claude Projects in beta.
GPT deadlines and the reported Gems schedule
OpenAI’s timetable sets separate dates for new GPT creation and retirement. WhatsNew reported on October 22, 2026, that Google’s Gems transition is scheduled by account type:
| Scheduled date | Service and affected accounts | Planned change |
| October 26, 2026 | Affected OpenAI Enterprise workspaces | New custom GPT creation is scheduled to end. Existing, unmigrated GPTs can still be edited. |
| November 2026 | Google personal accounts, according to WhatsNew | Gemini Gems are reported to transition to Skills. |
| December 11, 2026 | ChatGPT custom GPTs | Standard scheduled retirement. |
| February 11, 2027 | Affected Enterprise workspaces with a qualifying, approved deferral | Scheduled GPT retirement. |
| March 2027 | Google Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts, according to WhatsNew | Gemini Gems are reported to transition to Skills. |
| June 2027 | Google education accounts, according to WhatsNew | Gemini Gems are reported to transition to Skills. |
OpenAI says the applicable account or workspace notice may give a different timeline. The February extension applies only to affected Enterprise workspaces with an approved qualifying deferral.
What moves from a GPT to a plugin
OpenAI’s planned migration turns a GPT’s instructions into a skill within a plugin, copies its knowledge files as reference files, and adds connected apps to the plugin as apps. The selected model and custom actions do not transfer through this workflow, and OpenAI says the plugin may respond differently.
Migration uses the GPT’s latest published version, so drafts and unpublished edits do not transfer. After migration, the original GPT remains usable until retirement but becomes read-only. Existing conversations remain accessible after retirement, outside the replacement plugin.
Sharing settings do not carry over, and existing GPT users are not automatically given access to the plugin. Anyone relying on a custom action will need a separate replacement. OpenAI recommends reviewing the migrated instructions and files and testing familiar tasks before relying on the plugin.
Claude Projects is moving through a staged beta
Anthropic says the new version of Projects is rolling out in stages, beginning with Claude Code. Beta access is available to select Pro and Max subscribers who use Claude Code, as well as some Pro and Max users whose existing projects have been moved. Anthropic describes the new version as one conversation per project, with Claude able to split work into parallel threads that run in the cloud.
Anthropic says moved projects retain their instructions, files, full chat history, and scheduled tasks. Other existing projects in chat and Cowork remain on the current version for now. The existing Projects offering is available to free users too, who can create up to five projects.
