For years, Windows windows have been a constant presence, yet few users have studied them in depth. Our daily needs usually call for simpler controls, but the GUIPropView tool from Nirsoft lets us discover additional details that traditionally remain hidden, such as the approximate size of each window and its current position relative to the screen resolution.
What users expect from a Windows window is simply that it works and causes no problems. A lack of response is the first sign of an impending failure, and the frustration it brings is enormous. Compared to other operating systems, Windows windows have a fairly low profile. The latest versions allow precise control with automatic scrolling and better organization, but there are some things about windows that we completely ignore, such as their relative position on the screen.

That's where GUIPropView steps in, another small gem from Nirsoft. GUIPropView provides advanced data such as the code of handle, the class name, style, linked processes (including their names and exact location on the hard drive), and coordinates and estimated size. The window coordinates are calculated based on the first pixel in the top-left corner, and the program also reports negative coordinates—that is, windows that are a little off the main screen or on a secondary panel.
Another interesting aspect of GUIPropView is that it can detect windows created inside a program, not just those of main processes. A good example is Paint.NET, as it recognizes its tool, color, layer, and history windows. If you right-click each entry, GUIPropView presents a context menu that includes basic control options and advanced functions such as centering the window on the screen or directly terminating the process.
