Sooner or later, the restoration bug bites all of us, but some projects can become intimidating in record time. However, that doesn't have to be the case. A successful restoration is possible even without official documentation about the object in question. If you're not entirely convinced, then you should check out the videos from the Hand Tool Rescue channel, which is dedicated to restoring and repairing tools with decades of accumulated rust and general damage.
My personal restoration projects usually boil down to disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling. The pile of things needing that process keeps growing, and my excuses tend to be the same: I don't have the tools, I don't have the space, I don't have the time… "I don't have". Now, I want this article to serve as a warning: don't fall into that trap. Take advantage of the upcoming weekend, and if you want to restore or repair something, go ahead. It doesn't matter if it's soaking a piece in vinegar to remove rust, using sandpaper on old paint, or taking photos before using the screwdriver: Do it. Escape the "I don't have" and get started. These are the videos from Hand Tool Rescue, a relatively young YouTube channel whose goal is to find tools forgotten in time, and depending on their condition, carry out a rescue that makes them work again, or a complete restoration. Admittedly, some of the decisions made by its operator are questionable, like the case of the paint change on this fuel-powered drill, but what he did with the 1930 jigsaw was truly impressive. Sanders, circular saws, sharpening stones, planes, hand drills, and even a flamethrower are part of the repertoire.
The channel only has thirty videos, and not all of them are restorations, but there is plenty of material to explore there. Another positive aspect is that the videos are not loaded with annoying background music or unnecessary dialogue (with the exception of the occasional joke). In fact, the restorations are sped up, allowing us to see the final result faster. Definitely, don't miss it.
