Saving money is mainly a matter of discipline, but the first step is to identify those ant/ghost/vampire expenses that go unnoticed, and for that we need a management tool like HomeBank, free and open source.

Manage All Kinds of Expenses and Income with HomeBank
HomeBank may seem a bit intimidating at first, but don't worry. The first step is to create a management file, and HomeBank's wizard will guide you through its "step by step" to configure every aspect of it. This includes a title, the type of currency, categories (dozens of entries available), and creating the account.
Once that's done, the rest is about clicking the Add button to add transactions to your list. The general options for this function are three, Expense-Income-Transfer, with special fields for payment type, secondary information, reminders, and tags. As you accumulate entries, HomeBank can generate charts highlighting the "hottest" categories, so to speak, as well as show reports on trends over time, balances, budgets, and even car expenses.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when describing HomeBank. It's a program that's easy to learn but hard to master one hundred percent, and I definitely recommend checking its documentation for any questions.
