As World War II neared its end and German defeat became more tangible, the Nazi propaganda machine increasingly promoted the concept of Wunderwaffe, or "wonder weapons," that would drastically turn the tide of battle and deliver final victory to the Reich. Dozens of projects were developed under that vision, but most never left the prototype phase. One of the most interesting was the Horten Ho 229 V3, a supposed stealth fighter-bomber capable of striking targets a thousand kilometers away in one hour.
When one thinks of the main weapons at Nazi Germany's disposal, things like the Junkers Ju 87 (Stuka), U-boats, the Panzer IV, and of course the family of "vengeance weapons" with their V1 and V2 missiles, and the V3 cannon come to mind. These last examples demonstrated considerable technological advancement and quickly stood apart from the rest. As the war situation grew ever more complex for the fascist regime, its leaders decided to double down, hoping that some high-profile technological miracle would recover everything they were losing on and off the battlefield. One of those "miracles" was the Horten Ho 229.
The 3 by 1000 Rule
History tells us that the Horten Ho 229 emerged from a requirement by Hermann Göring himself to design a bomber that followed the "3 by 1000" rule, that is, fly at 1,000 kilometers per hour, drop 1,000 kilograms of bombs on targets 1,000 kilometers away. Only a jet-propelled aircraft could meet these parameters, and so the brothers Reimar and Walter Horten began work. Only three prototypes were built: the first was little more than a glider without engines, the second was destroyed during a flight test (killing the pilot in the process), and the third (V3) was taken out of Germany by Allied forces half-finished, accompanied by additional parts.
Stealth Claims and Reality
One of Reimar Horten's most resonant declarations was that the Ho 229 would be the first stealth aircraft, completely ignoring radar waves with the aid of a special coating made of charcoal. The restorers and conservators of the Ho 229 at the Smithsonian Museum conducted various tests on its surface but found no substance with the properties described by Horten. One of the most intriguing hypotheses suggests that the Hortens "extolled" the technical capability of their aircraft to stay away from the front lines, as did the rest of their team and families, but that doesn't mean today's engineers and designers learned nothing from the Ho 229 (quite the contrary)... without ignoring the fact that it looks great.
