AMD Ryzen CPU names do not follow one decoding rule across every family. Start by identifying whether a chip is desktop Ryzen, an earlier mobile Ryzen model, or Ryzen AI, then read its series label separately from its CPU architecture. For Ryzen AI 300, AMD calls the family third-generation Ryzen AI and specifies Zen 5 architecture.

Start with the processor family

A Ryzen name can identify a product family, a series, and model-specific features, but the clues change between desktop and mobile chips. A digit that has one meaning in an older mobile name should not automatically be read the same way in a desktop or Ryzen AI name.

For example, BGR’s interpretation of Ryzen 7 9800X3D assigns the 7 to a high tier, the 9 to a generation introduced in 2024, the 8 to high-performance positioning, and 00 to a base version. BGR also associates X3D with 3D V-Cache. That is its reading of this particular desktop model, not a universal decoder for every Ryzen name.

For the older mobile Ryzen 7 7840U, BGR associates the 7 with tier, the first digit of 7840 with the 2023 model year, and the 4 with Zen 4 or Zen 4c architecture. It describes U as a low-power mobile suffix. These clues belong to that earlier mobile naming context.

Ryzen AI 300 uses Zen 5

In AMD’s Ryzen AI names, the series number and CPU architecture identify different things. AMD describes Ryzen AI 300 as the third generation of Ryzen AI processors and says the family uses Zen 5 architecture. The “300” is the family-series label; Zen 5 is the CPU architecture. (AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 announcement)

A CPU architecture is the design generation used by the processor’s cores. AMD’s product page for the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 places it in Ryzen AI 300 Series and lists 4 Zen 5 cores plus 8 Zen 5c cores, for 12 cores and 24 threads. (AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 specifications)

Compare the Ryzen AI series labels with CPU architecture

Family-series labelAMD’s family descriptionExample model and CPU architecture

Ryzen AI 400 SeriesRyzen AI 400 SeriesRyzen AI 9 HX 470: 4 Zen 5 cores and 8 Zen 5c cores

AMD lists the HX 470 in Ryzen AI 400 Series and specifies the same 4 Zen 5 plus 8 Zen 5c core configuration, with 12 cores and 24 threads. The series label therefore does not tell you the CPU architecture on its own; the model’s specifications do.

What the name tells you about performance

A name can help identify a chip’s family, series, and some features. It does not provide workload-specific benchmark results or establish which processor is the better choice. For a gaming, creative, or other workload comparison, look at performance evidence for the exact models and task rather than ranking chips by a digit or tier label alone.
