One of the most intimidating aspects of repairing or restoring an old television is the nest of cables hidden inside. The first thing that comes to mind is: "What kind of madman can work under such conditions?" And to develop the answer to that question, nothing better than seeing how those same televisions were manufactured in the 1950s. Patience, discipline, and almost paranoid quality control were essential to guarantee the correct and safe functioning of the device.

Besides focusing on details like knobs and wood finishing, on more than one occasion he was forced to undo the "patches" of previous users who decided (for different reasons) to deviate from the original specifications.

While we must admit that improvisation becomes inevitable sooner or later (after all, the number of tubes and valves is decreasing), manufacturers were very meticulous when documenting diagrams, technical revisions, and catalogs with equivalent parts. In fact, the manufacturing process itself was recorded in several documentaries that we can now enjoy thanks to YouTube and the effort of many enthusiasts.

Building Televisions in the 1950s

The video declares the tuner as "the heart of the television", and it doesn't exaggerate. Old tuners demanded a very complex calibration process (and I'd dare say tedious), to such an extent that many modern restorers prefer to replace the entire component, using one rescued from another television. Production lines needed to find the best balance between speed and robustness in assembly, which led to the adoption of wire-wrap for internal connections.

Torture tests on televisions could extend up to 2,000 hours, with specific on/off intervals to evaluate the unit's behavior under thermal stress. The documentary also shows one of the first examples of wave soldering on PCBs, assisted by an additional verification, in case there is a deficit or excess of tin in a joint.

In short, the market demanded a different mentality. Televisions were very expensive at that time. Their manufacturers (RCA in this case) knew they would fail one way or another, and the information to repair them was essential. The rest of the story we already know well. Televisions gained stability, performance, functions, and simplicity, but they became disposable. Let's not forget that today's companies are not satisfied with blocking repairs: They also want to criminalize those who attempt them.
