The right comment at the right time can make a huge difference, but when it comes to files like images and executables, most users don't bother adding extra details. There are different options for adding notes and comments to a file. In fact, some formats have dedicated spaces within their structure. For example, the JPEG standard allows the insertion of comment blocks (or "COM"), but usually file explorers and managers don't let users read or modify those sections. All we need is the right tool. Some users might remember very old alternatives like edjpgcom (more than 20 years old). But if you plan to use something more modern to add text to a photo or executable, I recommend taking a look at FileNotz, a free and portable application that takes up no more than 300 kilobytes on disk.
How to Add Text to a Photo or Executable Easily
FileNotz's interface doesn't tell us much, but there's nothing to worry about: everything is explained in the readme file. If you right-click on the yellow section, the Context Menu entry will create an additional item in Windows' context menu to open any file with FileNotz directly from there. Another option (simpler in my opinion) is to drag the file to modify onto the FileNotz window, and that will open it automatically.
The second step is to add all the text or notes you need, right-click again to open FileNotz's menu, and choose the Update command. Obviously, this will modify both the date and size of the original file, but it shouldn't affect its content. Images will be loaded without issues by viewers, and the same should happen with executables. However, some formats lose integrity with this change (for example, animated GIFs). Similarly, some programs check their integrity before starting, so they may show an error.
FileNotz's developer explains that if the file's content is edited and/or rewritten, any note you've added will be lost. That's why FileNotz includes a Read Only feature to change the file's attribute to read-only. This isn't a problem for executables that remain intact, but if you decide to crop or change the resolution of an image with a note inside, you'll have to repeat the process of adding text.
