Google Search has no switch in its ordinary settings to turn off AI Overviews, according to Google help text. To avoid the visible summary, select the Web filter for an individual search or use a custom udm=14 search in Chrome. Community contributors also describe Firefox options, while CSS rules hide the panel without disabling other AI features or possible changes to ranking.

Select Web in the row of Search filters. If it is not shown there, open More and choose it. Google help describes Web results as text links without features such as AI Overviews. You need to select the filter for each search.

Set up udm=14 in Chrome

A custom search can make Web-style results the default for searches from Chrome’s address bar. The URL template is:

https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14

  1. Open Chrome settings and go to the search engine and site-search controls.
  2. Add a custom search entry using the URL above. Chrome’s form also asks for a name and shortcut.
  3. Set the new entry as the default search engine.

GuideRealm’s English-language walkthrough shows its creator adding a custom search in desktop Chrome and then running a search without an AI Overview. That result is from the recorded setup.

Firefox and other browser options

GuideRealm’s English-language walkthrough of a Chrome udm=14 search

Community contributors describe a Firefox keyword search that uses the same URL template, https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14, and a JavaScript bookmarklet that opens a Google search with udm=14. These are user-contributed workarounds, not Google settings.

CSS or ad-blocking rules can hide the visible overview. A community contributor cautions that this does not stop other AI features or possible changes to Search ranking, so it changes what appears on the page rather than serving as a broader AI opt-out.
