But using a traditional keyboard is not the most comfortable option in the world when the goal is to control everything from a sofa. That's where user Gyro comes in with the second version of his remote control for YouTube. Technically it behaves like a wireless keyboard, but it has seven buttons, a battery that lasts a year, an excellent form factor, and it's also open source.

Decided to give up cable? You're not alone, believe me. Traditional services are falling apart, and more and more users are adopting streaming as their primary source of entertainment. The rest is a matter of comfort. Nothing prevents you from using a wireless keyboard or mouse to control your computer. In fact, a Bluetooth mini keyboard averages 15 euros and looks like an acceptable solution, but if you want something more "conventional" so to speak... there's always the DIY route. For example, how does building a YouTube-compatible remote control sound?

User Gyro shared his first prototype in 2018, which worked with YouTube and Netflix. However, the device never left that original format. In other words, the remote was huge, and its interior was a true nest of wires. Version 2 of the remote control not only has a miniaturized design, but also incorporates details like color feedback, and a graphical interface that simplifies its programming.

The key behind this remote is a custom PCB that allows it to integrate an ATmega328P, an ATmega32U4, an NRF24L01 module, and a TP4056 charger with USB-C interface for the 500 mAh LiPo battery. It seems small at first glance, but being a remote control, Gyro estimates a duration close to a year.

The full tutorial is available on Instructables, and includes all the relevant files to create the PCB, program the modules, and build the enclosure... which wasn't easy, considering Gyro had to make multiple corrections and battle with the new design for weeks. "feature creep" is real, and can turn a good project into an endless torture. Fortunately Gyro reached a good port, and his remote looks great.
