Few things are more irritating than changing the batteries on your remote control, except when it stops working altogether—especially if the fault is limited to the power button. You have three options: try to repair it or clean its contacts, which risks breaking the remote while opening it; wrestle with a universal remote and its codes; or take the DIY route and build a small remote that simply turns on your TV.
Some get lost, others slowly deteriorate, and others end up dismembered in the jaws of a pet. Remote controls changed our lives, but our dependence on them is absolute. Several devices don't even work properly without their original remote or an equivalent, and any failure becomes frustrating in record time.

A Single-Button Solution
The average user would try to clean and/or repair the remote at this point, but not the Hackaday user known as mcu_nerd. The power button on his TV remote began to fail, and he is convinced that trying to open it would destroy it (some remotes come glued shut, ugh). His solution? Build a remote that turns on the TV and nothing else.
The Build and Its Evolution
His first version was based on an ATmega328P, but later editions adopt an ATtiny85. The PCB is relatively clean, and nothing stops you from downloading his KiCad-compatible file to study it or make modifications. The rest is a pure hack: an AA battery box, rubber bands, a cardboard box, lots of glue, and the power button comes back to life in the least expected way.
Is It Worth It?
This is where everyone wonders if such an effort is worthwhile. How much does a replacement remote cost? How hard is it to obtain? Can we open the remote without destroying it? Are spare parts available? Evidently, for mcu_nerd, none of these questions had satisfactory answers, and the simplest thing was to build a small remote with a single button. Give it a try!
