To check whether your Android phone still receives security updates, find its installed security-patch date, check the separate update channels, and look up support for the exact model. The date on your phone identifies the latest patch installed; it does not tell you whether another patch will be issued.
1. Find the installed security-patch date
Open Settings > About phone > Android version and look for the Android security update date. On Samsung phones, the relevant information may instead be under Software information. Menu names can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
The same screen can show your Android version, but an operating-system upgrade and a security patch are different things. Read the patch date as the date of the latest security patch installed on the phone—not as a support end date.
2. Check the separate update channels
A phone can have distinct update checks. Look at each one rather than treating any single update screen as a complete support status.
- Check for a system update: Open Settings > System > Software update. The menu path may differ on your phone. This screen can tell you whether a system update is currently offered.
- Check Google Play system updates: Look for the Google Play system-update status in Settings. These updates are delivered separately from full Android OS updates.
- Check app updates: In the Play Store, open your profile, select Manage apps & device, then See details under Updates available. The list can include Google Play services as well as other apps.
An update offered on the system screen describes what is available at that moment. A Google Play system update or an app update is a separate channel; neither tells you whether the manufacturer will continue supplying patches for your phone model.
3. Check support for your exact phone model
Use the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model to check its update eligibility. Model matters: a support period for one phone or product family does not answer the question for another.
Use the screens together: the security-patch date tells you what is installed, and the system-update screen tells you whether an update is currently offered. The manufacturer’s information for your exact model is where to check future support. A patch date that is several months old can be a reason to look more closely, but the date alone does not establish that support has ended.
4. Reduce exposure if support has ended
A phone may keep working after its manufacturer stops providing security patches, but newly identified vulnerabilities may then go without a manufacturer patch for that device. Keep apps updated, turn on two-factor authentication for sensitive accounts, review installed apps and their permissions, back up your data, and avoid sideloading apps.
These steps can reduce some risks. They do not replace operating-system security patches.
