In yet another episode of Windows maintenance will never end, Microsoft keeps adding and installing things in its operating system that users simply don't want. The market responds with tools focused on general system cleaning, and one of them is HDCleaner, developed by the creator of TweakPower. HDCleaner received an update in recent days, and it has a very convenient portable edition for users.
Windows maintenance is an endless dance, a process that borders on the perverse and forces us to never let our guard down. Something as simple as a hotfix or a background update can undo all our work in a few seconds, and that's not an exaggeration. Redmond insists on imposing its vision of a unified experience even on Windows 10, and our first action is nothing other than resisting those modifications.
That's how we get to HDCleaner, a tool created by Kurt Zimmerman, responsible for TweakPower and other Windows maintenance apps. As its name suggests, HDCleaner prioritizes cleaning tasks on temporary files, but it also helps us uninstall programs, detect duplicate files, securely delete data, edit the startup program list, and much more.
HDCleaner: A Free and Portable Option for Cleaning Windows
HDCleaner includes a dashboard that shows general computer and operating system information, along with a total of nine categories:
- Cleaning does a general sweep of the browser, operating system, plugins and registry with three depth levels (simple, default and advanced), while Shredder offers secure deletion options, and free space cleaning.
- System takes care of getting information about the computer, as well as verifying and/or removing programs that start with Windows, and uninstalling software (whether external or integrated into the operating system). Meanwhile, HDD affects duplicate files, defragmentation, swapfile and incorrect links.
- The Tools menu allows us to encrypt, split, rename and recover files, save our data structure in an HTML file, and check for the presence of "Alternate Data Streams" used by some malware variants. Registry backs up, defragments and searches for specific data in the Registry, and Monitoring can control processes, clean RAM, and monitor browser behavior.
- Finally, Backup Center keeps backups of all modifications that HDCleaner makes, and Extras includes very interesting resources like cleaning the WinSxS folder, cloning hard drives or SSDs, and managing programs via Winget.
