Monitors are moving away from the classic "dumb rectangle" profile to incorporate increasingly complex features like variable refresh rates and the ability to overclock. However, there are many things we can adjust on conventional screens, and all we need is the right software. With that in mind, we arrive at the portal of the tireless Nirsoft, which offers us ControlMyMonitor, a tool that will help you configure your monitor via software and take control of dozens of parameters, depending on the original support.
Calibrating a monitor is a mix of science and art. According to experts, even something as subtle as differences in ambient temperature can cause a monitor to change its color reproduction. The ideal would be to use a colorimeter to reduce variables and get more accurate results... but for some reason they still cost a fortune, and it's not worth making the investment for a single screen.
The alternative? Work the old-fashioned way, combining the monitor's physical controls, the panel enabled by the graphics card, and some additional software. There are many options out there, but one of the most interesting is ControlMyMonitor, developed by Nirsoft. The goal of this tool is to access the so-called "VCP Functions", as long as the monitor supports DDC/CI, an old standard that has been with us for decades.
How to configure your monitor with ControlMyMonitor
Before starting, I recommend using ControlMyMonitor to save your monitor's current configuration, a kind of backup that lets you go back if something doesn't work well. The values are easily modified: Right-click on one of them, and depending on its characteristics you can enter a fixed value, or increase/decrease in steps of 1 or 5. In some cases you can only use direct values, while in others it's impossible to make changes due to its read-only profile.
ControlMyMonitor supports multiple monitors, and all you have to do is select each one from the list. However, parameter differences can be very significant even between monitors of the same brand. I currently use two LG screens, and one enables several VCP functions, but the other seems to ignore the program completely (perhaps because its main role is as a TV).
