Last month we shared a list of the best gamepads for playing on PC, and one of them is undoubtedly the official DualShock 4 controller from Sony's PlayStation 4. The only problem is that Windows 10 does not have direct support for that gamepad, so when it comes to using it, we need to do a little "falsification" so to speak. The plan is to emulate an Xbox 360 gamepad so that all the commands from the DualShock 4 are interpreted through that emulation. The key is a small program called DS4Windows.
All users dream of a bit of interoperability and "factory" compatibility. Sometimes we find both at once and the world seems perfect, but in the vast majority of cases... not. There is always a missing piece of code, a virtual bridge, or the exact dose of good will. A fairly public conflict was the support for crossplay for Fortnite on the PlayStation 4. At first, Sony did not enable the possibility for users on its console to access the progress and skins obtained on other platforms, but that changed in the last days of September. Something similar happens with gamepads. If you have a computer with Windows 10 installed, Xbox controllers are essentially Plug and Play; however, Sony gamepads do not have the same luck. How to Connect a PlayStation 4 Gamepad to Your PC with DS4Windows
The first step is to download a program called DS4Windows. If you search for this name on Google, you will probably end up on the official site of the previous version, which technically works but has not received updates for more than two years. The edition we recommend belongs to Travis Nickles, also known as Ryochan7 on GitHub. DS4Windows works on Windows 7 SP1 or higher, and has two requirements: on the one hand, version 4.6.1 or higher of the .NET Framework (which should already exist on Windows 10), and on the other hand, deactivating the mapping support for Xbox and Sony gamepads in Steam (Settings - Controller - General Controller Settings).
Once that is done, open DS4Windows and follow the steps. The program will install a special driver for the gamepad, and the Xbox 360 controller if you use Windows 7. The last step is to connect the DualShock 4 via USB, or using a compatible dongle Bluetooth dongle. The rest is a matter of loading and editing profiles so that the controls adapt to your taste, or solving compatibility problems. For example, there are games that try to support the gamepad in their own way, but DS4Windows presents in the Settings tab the option to hide the DualShock 4.
