How to Convert an NES Shell into a Nintendo Switch Dock

A Broken NES Gets a Second Life as a Switch Dock

Many users are uncomfortable with the idea of modding a classic console. Something as simple as removing the RF connector and adding A/V support can destroy its value and cause other problems. But if the unit no longer works and the shell is relatively intact... why not? Reddit user “IMOKRUOK” decided to take that route by picking up a Nintendo NES shell and transformed it into a Nintendo Switch dock using the original components and several custom pieces.

The Official Dock Has Its Flaws

The Nintendo Switch is the most popular console right now, but if we stop to look at some technical details, it’s not hard to find shortcomings. One of them is the design of the dock. Excessive heat, screen scratches, and destroyed ports are just three of the problems linked to the poor relationship between Switch users and the official dock. This apparent conflict has only renewed interest in alternative docks, but they aren’t free of issues either. The Switch’s USB-C implementation isn’t fully standard, and on more than one occasion, differences in specifications have proved lethal for the console.

The Mod: Keeping the Original Hardware

That means any plan to mod the Switch dock will be “safer” if we keep the original hardware. That’s exactly what the Reddit user called “IMOKRUOK” did, transferring the dock’s PCB to a very special place: the shell of a Nintendo NES. But before you start accusing him of “consolicide,” it’s worth noting that the NES didn’t work, and he only had it to use its parts.

The Impressive Cut and Spring-Loaded Slot

Without a doubt, the most impressive part of the mod is the cut in the top of the shell, following the shape of the Switch. As if that weren’t enough, he took the trouble to add springs so the slot closes automatically when the console is removed. Many commenters expressed concern about the screen’s integrity, but “IMOKRUOK” explains that there’s a 1.25-millimeter gap, and his Switch has a screen protector installed. The same thing happened with temperature, but the bottom of the NES has several ventilation slots.

What’s Next?

Unfortunately, the image gallery (link below) lacks step-by-step instructions, but considering how this mod exploded on Reddit, it’s not hard to imagine a guide being developed later. The most frequent complaint? That the Switch connects from the front, like an NES cartridge. Will there be another project...?
