Paint.NET is one of the most widely used free photo editors. But you probably don't know that with the platform you can create mosaics using a single image.
What you need
To create the mosaic with Paint.NET, we'll use the 8bf filter and the Box Fitting plugin. The filter makes the plugin run in this environment.
First, you'll need to download the filter from its official page – it's a Photoshop filter. Then uncompress it and copy the two files “PSFilterPdn.dll” and “PSFilterShim files” and paste them into the “Effects” folder of Paint.NET.
Now you'll need to download the “Box Fitting” plugin, uncompress it, copy the files and paste them into the “Effects” folder. (Same action as the filter). Only then you open an image in Paint.NET, select “Effects” and click on “8bf Filter”.
At this point a window will open for “8bf Filter” from which you run the filter.
This way you can create a mosaic with the photo you have in the work area, being able to manipulate the boxes and the type of render among many other options. Just click “OK” and the platform will take a moment to create the mosaic from a photograph.
Although the Box Fitting plugin is designed to run in Photoshop, thanks to the 8bf filter we can install it and use it in Paint.NET and create custom mosaics from an image with a few clicks. Both 8bf filter and Box Fitting are free services that we can use in the Paint.NET platform.
