The main AI image generators try to imitate different styles, but they are unable to create vector images. The Recraft portal, however, is heading in that direction, offering a highly intuitive interface, dozens of presets to guide the generation process, SVG export without watermarks, and the ability to upload reference images.
The paths to image generation are quite varied. You can buy a couple of credits on Midjourney or DreamStudio, run local models with Stable Diffusion, or explore free options like BlueWillow. However, all these tools have something in common: they cannot create vector images. The training simply doesn't exist, and it doesn't seem to be a priority, to say the least. Fortunately, there are alternatives like Recraft, which allows us to create vector images for free and export the results.
How to Create Vector Images Using Text with Recraft
The only way to access Recraft (as it was during our tests) is by using a Google account as a credential. The interface takes just a few seconds to load, and Recraft's introduction explains all the relevant details. On the left, we have a selection menu to define the type of image we want, and a dialog box where we must write our prompt. Depending on the preset, we can create variants of an already generated image, or load an external photo as a reference so the model can "follow" its appearance (essentially an equivalent to Img2Img).
At the top, we find basic adjustment and editing tools, but they don't respond very well to mouse movements, especially when selecting a more limited region for repaint. The keyboard shortcuts have their own menu in the bottom-right corner, which also includes a support email and a link to their Discord server.
The rest is a matter of choosing a style, defining the image size, and clicking the Recraft button. As always happens with AI-based generation, the results have a very wide range of quality. On some occasions it's normal to get good images on the first try, but on others it will be necessary to repeat the cycle many times, and even load an image to guide the model. The best part? Recraft is free... for now.
