Listening to audio through the browser is part of everyday life, and plenty of users would love to have more precise control over factors like volume and equalization. Previously, we shared a series of extensions to increase the volume of certain tabs, but today we're focusing on improving the audio in Chrome with Ears, an extension that works as a volume booster and graphic equalizer at the same time.
If you want to listen to a song or find a soundtrack online, you'll likely visit YouTube or Spotify. However, the truth is that you can't expect much more than basic availability. The audio quality in the free tiers of both platforms is low to medium, and there are no advanced adjustment parameters.
Personally, I think that's a shame, because even a basic equalization has the potential to completely change the way we enjoy audio. The good news is that there are excellent secondary tools to fill that gap. That brings us to Ears, one of the most popular equalizers and volume boosters, which can improve audio in Chrome effortlessly.
How to improve audio in Chrome
Once installed, Ears must be activated per tab. That may seem inconvenient at first, but it works as a security measure and is actually more practical because you can leave that tab isolated and in the background with its own equalization, while the rest remain unaffected in terms of audio.
Each point in the equalizer acts as a filter that you can move freely, boosting or cutting frequencies. If you Shift+Click on a point, you can modify how wide or narrow that filter is. On the left, you'll find a general volume control and an option to enable the spectral visualizer, which is very useful for seeing your adjustments reflected on the audio.
Once you've finished your adjustments, you can save the configuration as a preset by assigning a name and then clicking the Save Preset button. The only preset included in Ears is Bass Boost, although there are many available on the Web to reproduce.
Ears hasn't received updates in almost four years, but it still works perfectly on the latest builds of Chrome and other Chromium flavors. Don't hesitate: if you want to improve the audio in Chrome and the other options don't convince you, you should give Ears a chance.
