One window in front, and the rest in the background. That's the essence of (almost) every window-based graphical environment, but over the years, users have demanded more control. Today we can use multiple monitors and expand our work area, but it wouldn't hurt to have an option that lets us keep a window in the foreground, no matter what happens with the rest. That option comes to Windows with a small application called PinWin.
Maybe you need to copy a command too complex to memorize while switching between windows, or you want to play while following a guide and Alt+Tab complicates your life (or worse, freezes the game). A brute-force solution is to buy a second monitor, dump all secondary content there and continue on the main panel, but most of us don't have that luxury. Windows 10 offers various features from snap assist to virtual desktops. But what if the plan is to keep a window in the foreground?
How to keep a window in the foreground
Simple: download a copy of PinWin and run it. Once the icon appears in the system tray, click the Select Window From Screen option, choose the window to pin, and that's it. Alternatively, you can find the desired window in the list detected by PinWin and place a checkmark next to it. To "unpin" so to speak, click the checkmark again, or choose the Unpin All Windows option. PinWin's options menu doesn't have much to offer. Just a setting to truncate window titles, a keyboard shortcut for selecting the window to pin, and a confirmation to check for updates on startup.
PinWin has a traditional installer, but I personally recommend trying the portable edition, which takes up just over 400 kilobytes in a temporary folder. The current build is 0.1, and its last update was on September 22, so you might encounter a couple of bugs or a window that refuses to stay in the foreground, but it worked very well on my side.
