A bright side of quarantine is that many people are using their free time and the new social distancing measures to expand their cosplay interests. In fact, some even go out in costume, as we've seen in our latest galleries. For obvious reasons, the so-called 'plague doctor' is a very popular choice, but a user of the Russian social network Pikabu took it to another level by building a mask with the casing of a Samsung CRT monitor. Working with plastic and heat is no easy task, yet the final result deserves a place here.

A Creative Quarantine Project

These are strange times, no doubt. The pandemic forced changes, canceled habits, and put many things we took for granted in check. Some people are not doing well, and others found a unique opportunity to expand their creativity, with the Web recording every attempt. One of the most recent brings us to Russia, or the Pikabu social network to be more precise (a clone of Reddit/Menéame). There, a user shared a very particular project: The construction of a plague doctor mask using a CRT monitor.

Joining halves, with the back already modified

The 'sacrifice' was a Samsung monitor with more bumps than we can count, and a huge crack on its front. The user 'dimimdi' looked for a pattern on the Web, drew it on the casing, and carefully cut both halves. The plastic of a CRT monitor is quite rigid, but nothing can stand against a heat gun, an essential element for modifying its shape. The rear of the monitor (with the Samsung logo in the center) became the upper part of the mask, while the top section of the casing was reused as the lower piece.

And the end. It would be even better if he painted it black...

The joining of the pieces was done with cable, as was the protection for the edges (otherwise, wearing the mask would be very painful). The objects decorating the eyes are the washers that separate plates in some hard drives. Several additional holes allow the installation of a strap, and with that the mask was finished. Its creator does not seem to have added additional protection inside the mask, and we also have no details about its weight (or how comfortable it is in the long run), but it is nonetheless fantastic. If you have an old damaged CRT that will never come back to life, why not give it a try?
