Windows provides its own solutions for making backups, and the big names on the web do their best to convince you to save your data to their online services, but if you don't want to rely on the cloud and prefer to stay away from Microsoft's vision, today we'll teach you to create your backups with an independent tool like EaseUS Todo Backup.
Making backups, or watching the computer on fire, knowing that we have lost all the data inside. As someone who has let hundreds of gigabytes slip away because of damaged hard drives, the truth is there is no choice Computers break, malware lurks, and all our bytes are much more ephemeral than they seem. Cloud, external drives, USB sticks, anything goes. What we offer here today is merely an alternative, but if you want to place your files on another platform, please don't hesitate.
Creating a backup in five steps
- Download and install a free copy of EaseUS Todo Backup (104 MB). Make sure to uncheck the box that mentions the "program to improve the user experience".
- Run Todo Backup, and click on one of the top options. For this example, we'll use "File Backup".
- Select all the files and folders to back up. The default destination is "MyBackups" on the C drive, but you can store them wherever you like.
- If necessary, specify within the "Backup Options" section the frequency with which the program will make the copies, choose a different compression level, and protect the backup with a password.
- Once the process is configured, click "Proceed", and wait. The final file will be saved with the PBD extension.
With your backups in hand, you'll need to decide where to store them. Depending on size, it might be practical to keep an extra copy of these files online with a service like Dropbox, but if online copies aren't an option, imagine a USB drive or, why not, an optical disc (DVD or Blu-ray).
