You can play cloud games on a Chromebook without a dedicated graphics card: a remote server runs the game, while your Chromebook decodes the video stream. You still need a compatible browser, a suitable connection, and access to a game covered by your chosen service. In the United States, NVIDIA lists GeForce NOW, and Amazon lists Luna cloud gaming for Prime members.
What “free” means for each service
Free access can mean a no-cost membership, a selection of free-to-play games, or a benefit attached to a paid membership. The options have different game and account requirements.
| Service | What you can play without a separate cloud-gaming plan | Main conditions |
| GeForce NOW | Supported games you own and hundreds of free-to-play games through its Free membership | NVIDIA says no payment method is needed to sign up. Queues may occur, and Free sessions can have up to two minutes of sponsorship messages before play. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Selected free-to-play games | Requires a Microsoft account and access from a supported region. The wider cloud catalog requires a Game Pass plan. |
| Amazon Luna | A changing selection of cloud games included with Prime | Requires an existing paid Prime membership. Amazon lists Luna cloud gaming in the United States. |
If you want to start without signing up for a paid game-streaming plan, GeForce NOW has a Free membership, while Xbox’s no-cost route covers selected games rather than its full cloud catalog. Luna’s included games are a Prime benefit, not a standalone free subscription. Amazon says its Prime library changes over time.
Check your Chromebook and connection
Cloud gaming moves the graphics work to a remote server, so a dedicated gaming GPU is not required. The Chromebook still has to decode the incoming stream. For GeForce NOW on Chromebook, NVIDIA lists a minimum of 4 GB of RAM and Chrome 77.x or later.
NVIDIA’s recommended connection targets depend on the stream mode: 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, and 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS. NVIDIA also specifies latency below 80 ms to its data center and recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Those high-resolution and frame-rate settings have a plan requirement: NVIDIA says GeForce NOW Ultimate is required for Chromebook streaming at 1600p and 120 FPS. A fast connection alone does not provide that membership tier.
For Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox’s current service page lists a 10 Mbps minimum download speed and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality; it recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 guide lists ChromeOS 85 or later for browser play on a Chromebook.
Start playing in your browser
- Check the browser requirements for your service. For GeForce NOW, use Chrome 77.x or later; Xbox Wire lists ChromeOS 85 or later for Xbox browser play.
- Choose a game you can access. GeForce NOW supports eligible games you own and free-to-play titles. Xbox’s free route covers selected free-to-play games in supported regions. With Luna, choose a title included in the rotating Prime library.
- Open the service and sign in. Go to GeForce NOW’s browser player and select the Free membership, or visit Xbox Cloud Gaming and sign in with a Microsoft account. Luna requires an eligible Amazon account and an active Prime membership for its included library.
- Use an input method supported by the game. Some GeForce NOW games require a gamepad or keyboard and mouse. Xbox says cloud play generally requires a compatible controller, though some games support touch controls. For Fortnite on Luna, Epic lists Chromebook play with keyboard and mouse or a Bluetooth controller.
Before choosing a title, check that it belongs to the access category you plan to use. A free membership or Prime benefit does not make every game in a service’s catalog free to play.
A Chromebook demonstration from 2022
Chrome Unboxed’s October 20, 2022 demonstration shows GeForce NOW settings and Fortnite gameplay on an Acer Chromebook 516 GE. Its settings menu includes an option for 2,500 × 1,600 at 120 FPS. NVIDIA’s current Chromebook requirements say Ultimate is required for streaming at 1600p and 120 FPS.
