We still wonder why Microsoft decided to remove 3D Pinball Space Cadet from Windows Vista. Several sources cite a bug as the main reason, but there may have been a licensing problem in the background, since the game was not developed by Redmond. The point is that if you want to play that pinball today, all you need to do is get a copy. It works very well on Windows 7 and Windows 10, although there are details to adjust.
The story tells us that 3D Pinball Space Cadet began its adventure as another table in the game Full Tilt! Pinball developed by Cinematronics and distributed by Maxis in 1995. Its arrival on Windows came thanks to the Microsoft Plus! package, and it went through Windows NT 4.0, Windows ME, and Windows 2000 before reaching its peak of popularity on Windows XP. However, Windows Vista removed it from the map.
Why? An old 2012 article published on the Microsoft developer blog suggests that a collision bug (the ball passed through objects) in the 64-bit version was responsible for the removal (the executive priority was to focus on the operating system launch), and that theories about licensing conflicts were wrong. Those theories gained traction because Microsoft was never able to fulfill the multiple requests to release the code. After all, it does not belong to it.

Therefore, if the game is not Microsoft's property and is more than 25 years old, in the minds of many users it already qualifies as abandonware. That led to the creation of installers compatible with modern versions of Windows, and we decided to download one to see how well it works.
The good news is that 3D Pinball Space Cadet does not suffer any major technical failure. All the graphics are there as well as the sounds, and the collision bug did not manifest in any of our tests. There are only two details: First, the installer may not create shortcuts for the game, and you will have to take care of that. Second, both the paddle and the "tilt" on the right side were not assigned to any key. This is fixed with a couple of clicks.
Perhaps the most annoying aspect of playing 3D Pinball Space Cadet today is its resolution. The original build in Full Tilt! Pinball supported 1024 by 768 pixels, but the Windows edition does not go beyond 640 by 480. That means that on a 4K monitor, the table looks like a stamp.
