Task Scheduler is one of the most advanced resources Windows offers, but Microsoft never bothered to make it friendly to users, and it remains largely ignored. Fortunately, there are free tools that simplify the automation of certain tasks, starting with scheduling your PC to shut down automatically. One such tool is AutoOff, which also supports tasks like suspension, restart, launching programs, and closing them.
Many users prefer to leave their computers on to avoid interrupting their sessions, but judging by the messages being recorded about energy consumption ("we'll die of heat", "we'll die of cold"... "we'll die of heat 'and' cold"), it might be necessary to adjust the efficiency of our daily routine. For instance, it's perfectly logical to let the machine work while we rest, but not all applications have an option to shut down when the task is complete.
From a technical standpoint, Windows provides tools like Task Scheduler and the shutdown command that works from the console, but they have proven quite inconvenient. So what can we use as an alternative to schedule your PC to shut down automatically? A lightweight and free application is AutoOff, which was recently updated and works on any Windows edition from XP onward.
How to schedule your PC to turn off with AutoOff
AutoOff's functions are divided into five tabs: Add, Schedule, Status, Options, and Window. In Add, you can program a total of nine different actions, among which shutdown and restart, suspension, turning the monitor on and off, desktop lock, launching programs, and setting a special alarm.
Scheduling conditions are very flexible, from a precise number of hours-minutes-seconds to a time interval after entering standby. AutoOff also allows us to specify exact days of the week or month, and create desktop or taskbar shortcuts if we want to activate these configurations manually.
Schedule reports all scheduled actions in AutoOff, Status generates a report with usage time and the number of executions, Window has additional settings for the interface, and Options includes parameters that definitely merit our attention, such as forcing a process if it doesn't respond to shutdown, starting AutoOff with Windows, and setting an emergency "last confirmation" in case we regret.
AutoOff is closed-source freeware, has no portable version or Spanish translation, but it works much better than expected, and we recommend it anyway. Give it a try!
