The Web is full of videos of “legendary workers” who master every aspect of their routine, developing an unprecedented combination of speed and precision. This also happens among users who become true masters of keyboard shortcuts… but there are tasks so repetitive and boring that you can't stop thinking about automating them. That’s the promise of PlayStatic, an application that lets us record keyboard and mouse macros to reduce tedious cycles to a single action.
We have previously explored the virtues of AutoHotkey and its utility in creating canned responses with keyboard shortcuts. AutoHotkey is very powerful, but the need to write a script for each case is not something that appeals to users. The priority is another kind of tool, one that allows recording keyboard and mouse macros with relative ease, using a complete and intuitive interface. That is exactly what PlayStatic offers.
How to record keyboard and mouse macros with PlayStatic
The possibility of configuring its interface in Spanish helps a lot in the learning process. The first step is to go to the “Recording” tab, click on “Start recording”, perform all movements, clicks and keystrokes, and finally press Left Shift + E to stop it. It is very important to save that recording as a task list, otherwise you will have to repeat the recording.
The second part of the configuration continues in the “Execute tasks” tab. Here we must create a new event, assigning a name, description, the exact path of the task file it will execute, and a special keyboard shortcut to activate it. There are also other “triggers” such as user inactivity and file monitoring, but the hotkey is the most practical type of event.
PlayStatic helps us define delays, repeat speed, and something essential like loop execution (“Run until stop”). But if we only want a specific task, it might be more convenient to use the “Add tasks manually” section, where the main actions for the mouse, the down and up keys of the keyboard, and the possibility of sending automatic text appear.
Finally, PlayStatic presents itself to the public as donationware, but from a technical point of view it is freemium, since there are some functions blocked by its paywall (among them, the script scheduler and the opening of system consoles). The program has not received any update since 2021, however, it responded very well under Windows 11. Its only limitation? I couldn't get it to record the mouse wheel. Download below!
