The webcam went from a "semi-forgotten accessory" to an absolute star in this era of pandemics, teleworking, and remote classes. That made us remember some details, starting with the poor image quality many units offer, and the lack of adequate software. Workplaces, schools, even entire governments. It doesn't matter if it's via Zoom, Skype, or another similar program. Overnight, everyone needs a webcam, and some users are paying a fortune for them. This software has accumulated several years of work (its oldest build on GitHub is from 2012), and has a healthy number of available functions. Obviously, the first two are capturing images and recording videos. Many nature enthusiasts use Webcamoid to record the activity of trees and nests, and take advantage of several options regarding codec and general bitrate.

But there's more: What if the plan isn't to share your face, but what you do on the computer? Webcamoid offers two resources for that: Create a virtual camera compatible with a wide number of programs, and record the desktop. This way, you can create tutorials or step-by-step guides. Webcamoid is very easy to use and doesn't drag major dependencies. It's compatible with Windows from version 8 in 32 or 64 bits, Mac OS 10.13 or higher, and several flavors of 64-bit Linux, with virtual camera drivers separately. The only technical details we've found are occasional crashes when combining the virtual camera with desktop recording, but the bugs have already been reported, and future fixes are expected in the next update.
