The shutdown command available in Windows lets us control multiple aspects when shutting down and restarting the computer, but since it is a manual tool without a graphical interface, users don't dedicate much time to it. The application OxyBits EasyShutdown works as an equivalent to shutdown that enables timers and confirmations to shut down, restart, suspend, end or block sessions, and force the closure of applications.
For a while, Microsoft has offered in Windows a way to configure timers before shutting down/restarting/hibernating the computer. Everything goes through the shutdown tool, which I don't consider hard to use. For example, shutdown -r -t 3600 tells the computer to restart (-r) with a timer (-t) of one hour (3600, expressed in seconds). However, what works for me doesn't necessarily work for the rest of the users. Shutdown is a console command, and it also requires elevated privileges, two details that are often inconvenient.
How to Configure Timers to Shut Down and Restart with EasyShutdown
That is when EasyShutdown comes in. From a certain point of view, EasyShutdown's main task is to put many of the shutdown functions under a very convenient graphical interface. Do you want to restart your computer within two hours? Look for the Delayed Restart option and activate it with a 120-minute timer. Is a stubborn application blocking the restart process? Go to the Settings section and select Force Quit Applications so it doesn't happen again. In total, the commands available under EasyShutdown are five: shut down, restart, suspend, log off, and lock session.
If you want EasyShutdown to start with your computer, a visit to the Settings section and a check on Auto Start is all you need. The program is freeware, quite lightweight, and was updated in the last days of April. The only detail is that its developer doesn't offer a portable version, but it works with any edition of Windows from XP onwards, in 32 or 64 bits.
