Nobody denies that software keeps getting bigger, and even a single game can demand hundreds of gigabytes without much explanation. But a large share of the wasted space on our drives is the responsibility of duplicate files, temporary files that have been sleeping on the disk for years, music and videos we haven’t played in a long time, and outdated applications we’ve already replaced. If you feel you need a more thorough analysis, the Dissy app will help you see the free space on your PC and check which content is the most problematic.

How to see the free space on your PC

In the past I swore I would never go back to hard drives and would only install SSDs on my machines, but at the current rate I think I’m going to end up eating that oath. Examples? I have a couple to share: Control Ultimate Edition takes up 50 GB, and Horizon Zero Dawn exceeds 70. I could recover a good chunk of my drives if I delete them, but the wait to download them was too long, and the idea of a permanent offline backup is becoming very attractive. Then there are even more serious cases like Warzone, which can devour 250 GB with a full installation.

Generally speaking, our options are two: we either run out to buy more storage, or we try to detect files that are sleeping while consuming space at the same time. WinDirStat is a classic (though it has become very slow), and WizTree is an excellent alternative for personal use, but today I’d like to add Dissy, with a more polished interface and some very interesting options.

Dissy, an excellent tool to see the free space on your PC

The app is intuitive and easy to use

On the left side you’ll find all of Dissy’s options, the most important being Scan & Analyze for obtaining the standard report of any drive, Large files, which detects the biggest files, and Search duplicates, which simplifies the process of identifying duplicate files. Dissy also has a Backup function that backs up folders or entire drives, and the Important section, to highlight the most relevant material and avoid accidental deletion. For now, the interface only supports English and Portuguese, but that isn’t a major problem.

Dissy helps us detect duplicates, but be careful! Some must remain on the disk

Dissy is freeware without restrictions, but it’s not an open-source project, nor does it have a portable edition. That said, the software includes an automatic update checker that will alert us when a new build is available. Download a copy!
