One of the most important features WhatsApp offers is the ability to block contacts unilaterally. Once they're on your blacklist, sending and receiving messages stops completely. Ideally, things would end there, but if you feel the need to explain or clarify something before the relationship breaks entirely, there are actually two ways to get around that artificial barrier and send a message to someone who has blocked you on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp revolutionized the way we communicate. For better or worse, it managed to reduce time and distance, and under the right conditions it's free. Of course, there are those who question that detail (after all, Facebook is dying to monetize the messenger), but beyond the technical and commercial aspects, WhatsApp is defined by its users... which brings its own set of problems. Anxiety over the two checkmarks, read receipts, last seen statuses, and obviously, fights and blocks.

A joke that lands badly, lack of context, differences that end up exploding through the app... in short, WhatsApp users are human, we have blood in our veins, sometimes we find idiots, and sometimes we are the idiots. The block is supposedly the healthiest option to end a conflict and move on. However, if you feel you need to explain one last detail and send a message to someone who has blocked you, you have two options.

Method 1: Through a shared group

The first method requires a third party. With the block in place, you can no longer send messages to that contact or add them to a group, but someone else can. Maybe the group was formed earlier, or there's enough trust to create one from scratch for you.

The block is user-to-user, but it doesn't apply if both share a group created by someone else (yes, that's Windows Phone, don't worry).

The point is that through a group, you can temporarily bypass the block and get one more chance to fix the situation. Needless to say, the other person can simply leave the group if they don't want to hear you, and I imagine the group creator might also have objections. (Ed. note: WhatsApp could block this loophole in the future with finer control over group creation.)

Method 2: Use SMS instead

The second option is one many people have lost sight of lately... and that's ignoring WhatsApp altogether. Your contact may have blocked you, but you still have their contact and phone number. While many smartphones out there offer a mechanism to block calls and messages from specific numbers, it doesn't hurt to send an SMS.

Yes, it will cost you money and the format isn't the best, but if you truly want to get that message across, you won't think twice. To close, a humble recommendation: Don't fall into toxicity. The idea is to repair, not to cause more harm.
