While there are plenty of reasons to downgrade or keep older versions, in general it is a good idea to update our favorite applications. However, the process becomes tedious in record time if we have to download each installer manually. Fortunately, there are tools like UpdateHub that help us update applications in Windows easily, automating their download and installation.
Security is the first argument many developers put on the table when recommending updates. In fact, Microsoft made them mandatory for that same reason, but the story is a bit different when talking about applications. Over time we have learned that it is not always good to install the latest version of a program due to bugs or performance issues, but there are applications that cannot be neglected (for example, browsers).
That is where UpdateHub comes in. Instead of tracking and manually installing the latest versions of each application, UpdateHub detects existing copies, compares them with the most recent online build, and offers the corresponding updates, with the possibility to rollback if something goes wrong along the way.
UpdateHub: A solid tool to update applications in Windows
On the first run, UpdateHub takes us to its Dashboard, which it uses to present information about pending updates (apparently it will include additional widgets later). The Apps section is the one that interests us most: There we can see the applications UpdateHub detected, along with their official description, the installed version, and the one available on the Internet. With a simple click on Update, it will download all relevant files (some installations require additional confirmations and privilege elevation).
The last two sections are MS Store Apps and Windows Update. Both are in charge of looking for updates for applications from the store and the operating system, but I found a problem in them: They ask for administrator privileges and do not detect them correctly. The Issues menu in its GitHub profile is full of reports, so I imagine UpdateHub itself will need one or two updates in the near future. Even so, I think it works well enough to adopt it permanently.
