Windows Update is one of those "necessary evils" that users have learned to tolerate over the years. The lack of control over the installation process and the impossibility of disabling updates are frustrating from every point of view, and it's not crazy to believe that Redmond basically won us over by exhaustion. However, it's not a bad idea to keep a close watch on Windows Update behavior, because there will always be a patch or an unexpected change with the potential to cause problems. The update history usually presents adequate information, but if doubts arise about its records, nothing prevents us from downloading a copy of Windows Update Viewer (WUView).
What is Windows Update Viewer?
Windows Update Viewer (WUView) is an open-source tool with an intuitive interface that helps you inspect the update history in Windows 10 and 11. The program has a portable edition, and it's enough to open its executable from a temporary folder. The only technical requirement is the 6.0 version of .NET, but that's a minor matter these days.
Once loaded, WUView shows a list with all detected hotfixes, their associated KB codes, the installation date, and the official title. The interface includes a details panel with secondary data for each update, support links, and references for error codes—very useful when something goes wrong. WUView also allows you to exclude specific entries (such as Defender's) and copy or export information in text or CSV format.
Known Issues
The developer of WUView warns about some bugs present in the latest build. The most important is an erroneous "In Progress" report for certain updates under Windows 10 (this does not happen in Windows 11), and the reset of the history when a major upgrade occurs or Windows is repaired. Apart from that, the program works very well, and it's worth having a copy just in case.
