A Nov. 5, 2026 report by Huawei Central said Zhu Dongdong, president of Huawei’s PC and Tablet Product Line, announced at the 2026 HarmonyOS Office Industry Summit that HarmonyOS PCs were planned to support sideloading during 2026. Huawei’s stated aim, as relayed by the outlet, was to let users install apps from secure sources.

What sideloading means for HarmonyOS PCs

Sideloading is installing an app from outside a platform’s official store. It describes an installation route, not whether a particular app can run on a device. The report did not identify a PC package format, so the plan does not specify support for APK files.

Living In Harmony’s post on X made the same distinction for Windows software: sideloading alone would not make Windows apps run natively on HarmonyOS PCs. An app still needs to be compatible with the operating system to run.

Sideloading changes how an app gets installed; it does not make the app compatible or safe by itself.

The general risks of installing apps outside a store

Huawei Central cited malware and other security threats, delayed updates, and possible stability problems as general risks of sideloading. Those risks make the source of an app important, while the reported goal of installing from secure sources does not describe the specific safeguards Huawei plans to use.
