iPhone 18 Pro Max Review: The Camera Upgrade Explained

The iPhone 18 Pro Max’s clearest practical upgrade is its variable-aperture main camera and manual controls. They make the phone most compelling for photographers who want to shape a shot; owners of recent Pro models have a narrower reason to upgrade.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max in brief

Apple lists a 6.9-inch display, a weight of 249 g and a depth of 8.75 mm for the Pro Max. The phone uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip and has three 48MP rear cameras: a main camera, an ultrawide camera and a 4× telephoto camera.

The main camera is the standout change. Its six-blade aperture adjusts from f/1.48, the wider setting, to f/4, the narrower one. The native Camera app also offers manual adjustments for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and focus.

A variable aperture changes the lens opening, giving you more direct control over how much light reaches the camera sensor. The main camera can adjust automatically, while manual controls let you take over. At f/4, one hands-on demonstration uses the narrower setting to create starbursts and motion blur.

That flexibility is most useful when you want to make a deliberate photographic choice rather than simply point and shoot. It also asks more of you: without a feel for exposure, changing aperture or shutter speed can produce a worse result than leaving the camera on Auto.

Battery, cooling and performance

Battery reports vary by the kind of observation. Apple claims six more hours of video playback than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A five-day review account of the Pro line described improved efficiency during everyday use; a separate battery test found the Pro Max’s endurance similar to its predecessor. A week-long personal assessment also praised battery life under heavy use.

In a wired-charge test, the Pro Max reached 77% after 30 minutes, with 48 percentage points added in the first 15 minutes. Apple also says the Pro line’s vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the previous Pro design.

Who may notice the upgrade?

The camera controls give the iPhone 18 Pro Max a clearer case for photographers moving from an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older. If you have an iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro, the upgrade is harder to justify unless you expect to use the variable aperture and manual settings. The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 4× telephoto camera is unchanged.

The smaller iPhone 18 Pro is another option: it shares the Pro Max’s cameras, processor and software, but is lighter and easier to carry. It has a different display resolution and battery capacity. The smaller model weighs 211 g; the Pro Max weighs 249 g.
