iPhone 18 Pro vs. Duo: Choose the camera or the big screen

The iPhone 18 Pro is the sensible choice for photography, video and a familiar phone design. The iPhone 18 Pro Max adds the largest conventional display and the strongest listed battery ratings. The iPhone Duo makes sense when you will regularly use its 7.6-inch folding screen, multitasking features or Apple Pencil support. At equal 256GB storage, it costs $700 more than the Pro Max.

iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and Duo: the key differences

All three models use Apple’s A20 Pro platform, with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. That gives the lineup a common performance foundation, but the hardware around the chip is where the buying decision changes dramatically.

Screen and form factor: the Duo buys you more workspace

The iPhone Duo’s defining feature is its 7.6-inch inner display. Folded, it uses a 5.4-inch outer display; opened, it provides a much broader canvas for documents, reading, video, gaming and side-by-side apps. Its iOS 27 software includes Split View, and the Duo supports Apple Pencil with USB-C on the inner screen.

That flexibility comes with a very different physical shape. The Duo measures 84.1mm wide and 11.3mm thick when closed, compared with 71.9mm wide and 8.75mm thick for the iPhone 18 Pro. It weighs 254g, just 5g more than the Pro Max and 43g more than the regular Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro remains the lightest option if you want a conventional phone that is easier to carry.

The Pro Max offers a 6.9-inch display without changing the familiar slab design. It is the middle ground: more screen than the Pro, but without the Duo’s foldable interface or two-screen workflow.

Cameras: the Pro models are the creative choice

If cameras are central to your purchase, choose the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both have a 48MP Pro Fusion triple-camera system, variable aperture and a dedicated 48MP telephoto camera. Their listed optical-quality zoom range reaches 16×, compared with 4× on the Duo.

The Pro models also support ProRAW, ProRes, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, ACES, Genlock and spatial photos and video. Those formats matter if you edit seriously, shoot with manual control or need a phone that fits into a larger production workflow.

The Duo uses a 48MP Dual Fusion dual-camera system with a fixed f/1.6 main aperture and no dedicated telephoto camera. It still has foldable-specific tools, including Smart Take and Duo Preview, which can show the camera view across both sides of the open display. That is a clever use of the form factor, but it does not replace the Pro models’ extra camera hardware.

The front-camera setup also differs. The Pro models use an 18MP Center Stage camera with autofocus. The Duo has a 12MP outer Center Stage camera and an inner under-display camera limited to 1080p at 30 or 60 frames per second.

Battery, weight and controls

The iPhone 18 Pro Max leads the listed battery ratings: up to 30 hours of typical use and up to 45 hours of local video playback. The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 24 hours of typical use and 36 hours of local video playback. The Duo is also rated for up to 24 hours of typical use, while its local video rating reaches up to 44 hours on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner display.

The result is a useful distinction: the Duo’s large screen does not automatically make it the battery champion. The display you use changes the rating, and the Pro Max remains the strongest option in the listed typical-use and local-video figures.

Authentication is another clear split. The Pro models use Face ID and retain the Action button. The Duo uses Touch ID in its side button and does not include the Action button. If Face ID is part of your daily muscle memory, that change is not a footnote—it is a different interaction model.

All three support MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W. The listed 50% charging time is around 15 minutes for both Pro models and around 20 minutes for the Duo.

Price and US availability

At 256GB, Apple’s US starting prices are $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro, $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max and $1,999 for the iPhone Duo. The Duo therefore carries a $700 premium over the Pro Max and an $800 premium over the Pro at the same storage capacity.
