The easiest way to access ChatGPT is by visiting OpenAI's official website, but the chatbot has a background API, which opens the door to alternative clients. One of the most interesting is JavaGPT, which, being based on Java, offers more flexible compatibility and even works on legacy systems like Windows 98 or Windows 2000.
Despite its extraordinary explosion in popularity, the general access parameters for ChatGPT haven't changed much. To use the chatbot, you need to create an account and accept phone number verification. After that, the most significant difficulties are saturation: there are times when it's almost impossible to enter ChatGPT, forcing us to adapt our sessions.
However, ChatGPT desperately needs broader support for alternative clients. Users can generate API keys relatively easily, but besides having usage limits on free plans, they're only copied once. If you're willing to give it a try, I think the client JavaGPT is a great candidate. On one hand, it's very easy to configure, and on the other, its Java-based development makes it compatible with very old versions of Windows, under certain conditions.
ChatGPT on Windows 98 and 2000? Try JavaGPT
As its official GitHub profile indicates, JavaGPT requires the installation of Java 8 or higher, but you have to follow the process very closely on Windows 98 and Windows 2000, since in both cases it needs the KernelEx module (its developer FrankCYB shared a guide on Reddit with precise instructions).
Regardless of the operating system chosen, the fundamental step to configure JavaGPT is to open the config.properties file in its folder and add the API key in the "apikey" section. Save the changes and run JavaGPT.jar. The JavaGPT interface allows you to save and load chats, confirm requests with Enter, and create new lines with Shift+Enter.
Now, none of this will help if your API key has reached its usage limit. That's exactly what happened to me during our tests, and there's nothing to do about it. JavaGPT works very well, but OpenAI wants to monetize its new toy.
